Elephant Nap

Elephant Seals near San Simeon, CA.

There is a beach right off of Highway 1 where the seals come each year (winter time). Its amazing to just pull over your car and be able to get so close to these guys. Some large males were out in the water fighting, but I only had my wee point and shoot with me and could not get a good telephoto image. Mostly though, these guys just sleep alot. And they’re sort of smelly.

I took this picture last year, but it was in color and didn’t really work. I’m happy to have found it again and play with it in black and white. I’m a photo editing newbie so I used Picassa to de-color it. I am publicly and guiltily announcing my use of Picassa!

That's really nice, Sabine. Great composition and texture. Looks like you might be oversharpening just a bit.

Thanks John, and now that I am not seeing it from the laptop monitor, I agree!

I just replaced with an unsharpened version and I like it soo much better. I need a better laptop monitor. I am too lazy to sit at a desk while I edit photos!

I thought I was going to be seeing_cows! All to do with one's environment, I guess.

Nominated I pick this photograph to be on the cover of National Geographic National Geographic: Are You Good Enough? Excellent composition, I like the line up of the sea elephants and they look so peaceful in their sleep.

Great shot--almost abstract. Very textural.
