Chariot Start
Chariot Races at Hellyer Velodrome, San Jose, CA
This race is a standing start. The guys behind are actually pushing the riders into their starts. Unfortunately, Gio, the holder on the left got a little overzealous and pushed Alicia right into Jenny. Fortunately, these ladies are calm and experienced and they just bumped and rode on.
The competition amongst the holders is almost as fierce as the riders.

That IS a great shot! No wonder we bumped into each other - I think Gio thought he was flinging her for a Madison!

or maybe he mistook her for a bowling ball?

Or from the looks of it, a punching bag!

No hdr (which i guess would be single exposure anyway) just a flash and an armload of post processing.
took away saturation and vibrancy, upped the fill light and blacks (which is tough to do to a non raw file without blowing out pixels), did some curves, a little cloning to get rid of a few distractions, and some dodging (maybe a little too much now that I look at, but oh well, I am a drama queen)

This is a fantastic action shot. It's great when you post the original and go through the stages of what you've done; I'm learning a lot from these. Thanks Sabine.

Kurt, you were probably the only photographer not there.
This is from Wednesday night though. I was too busy helping and racing to take pics on Friday. You should definitely make it out for one though...quite the party

Mark,
A chariot race is barely over a lap on the velodrome, so its very fast (approaching 30mph in our group I would guess)and furious and a good start means everything.
I totally suck at this race. Alicia and Jenny in the pic above are awesome at it.

great capture on the action but you obviously know when to shoot. The expressions are intense as is the body language!

Fabulous action, expression. I agree, it's great to see the original shot and know what you have done to it. The crop is perfect and viewed large is a MUST for those priceless expressions !

And there was me thinking that the guys behind were starting with a serious disadvantage. This is exactly how I learned to ride, with my Dad pushing me from behind. I wonder how far these got before they realised the person behind had let go....?
