I did the usual exposure, sat and balance adjustments in lightroom. Also reduced clarity.
In photoshop I cloned out the shadow and added a black and white layer under the sand to enhance it.

that's cool...what does the b&w layer do? i mean how does it enhance it?

Adding a B&W layer can increase contrast in a "different" way. To me it seems to add texture. I've used it when burning in, or adding contrast just doesn't work.
You can also use it to make a photo look like a colorized black and white.
In this case I added a B&W layer to the sand only. And then I reduced the layer to about 75% to allow for some of the sand color to come through. I think I used the soft overlay.

oh thanks for the PS tips...i was shooting at moss landing just the other day. still looking for the ultimate shot. yours are wonderful of course and make me what to just chuck my camera into the harbor(but i wont!)
